What Year 1 covers

Year 1 is the first formal year of primary school. Pupils consolidate Reception phonics, begin reading independently, learn to write simple sentences, and start formal mathematics — number bonds, simple addition and subtraction, basic shape and measurement.

The Phonics Screening Check

Pupils in Year 1 in England normally take the phonics screening check in June. The check uses 40 words, including real and pseudo-words. Eligible Year 2 pupils also take the check if they have not taken it before or did not meet the expected standard in Year 1. Phonics practice can help pupils build their decoding fluency.
